Tips for Rainy Day Outfits
TIP #1: Coordinate with Your Umbrella
What’s the essential of rainy days? Yes! The umbrella! Since it’s already part of the rainy day outfit, why not focus on it and make it a little more playful?
Matching your umbrella with your outfit can be really stylish. For example, if your umbrella is blue, wear something blue. If your umbrella is checked, wear something checked, like a checked mini skirt or pants. If your umbrella is polka-dotted, wear something polka-dotted, like a polka-dotted dress. Can you imagine that? Aren’t they such cute rainy day outfits?
TIP #2: Top Off with a Cool Hat
A hat is so convenient. When the rain isn’t too heavy, I’d rather wear a hat than carry an umbrella. You know, it’s kind of bothersome when you have to carry an umbrella all day long.
My choice is a baseball cap, which has a long brim that protects my face from the rain and is casual enough to wear anytime. I actually wear it on light rainy days. When I wear my baseball cap with a jacket or coat, and put my hands into my pockets, I don’t feel the rain at all even if I’m not using an umbrella!
If you don’t mind your hat and clothes getting a little wet (they’ll dry out anyway), I highly recommend giving it a try. You could also try a bucket hat or other hats with brims.
TIP #3: Stay Cozy with a Hoodie
It’s also not bad to wear a hoodie on light rainy days or cloudy days that might rain soon. When it suddenly rains and you don’t have a hat or umbrella, at least you have a hood to keep your head and hair dry.
It may not protect your face as well as wearing a hat, though. But don’t worry! If you really don’t want raindrops falling on your face, I recommend wearing a baseball cap with the hoodie (make sure to use your hood). It’s another cool look that works on rainy days!
TIP #4: Avoid Full-Length Pants & Skirts
I don’t like my pants or skirts getting wet or being covered in dirt, especially on rainy days. That’s why I always try to avoid wearing full-length pants and maxi skirts that touch the ground when it rains.
So, what do I wear instead?
If it’s warm, I usually wear shorts. (Mini skirts and mini dresses are nice alternatives.)
If it’s cold, I often wear a midi skirt. A midi dress or cropped pants are great options too, and they give you a good opportunity to showcase your pretty shoes, whether they are sandals, heels, or boots!
You can also pair what I just mentioned (shorts, mini skirts, mini dresses) with long boots to stay warm in cold weather.
TIP #5: Embrace Leather for a Chic Look
While natural leather can resist small amounts of rain, its quality may not last long when exposed to too much rain or humidity.
I had a natural leather jacket before and it was one of my favorite jackets. I learned a hard lesson: I put my jacket in a humid place for too long and it became unwearable because there was too much mold on it. If you have precious clothes, treat them well and take care of them properly.
On the other hand, faux leather has better water resistance than natural leather. So, I recommend wearing faux leather items like jackets, pants, skirts, and boots that will help you remain chic on rainy days.
But that doesn’t mean they will never be damaged. It depends on the actual materials and how you use them. To extend the life span of your clothing, it’s best to keep it dry after exposure to rain.
Lastly, it will be wonderful to choose faux leather items made from recycled plastic for sustainability. The earth will thank you!
TIP #6: Stay Warm with Jackets & Coats
Rainy days are generally colder. So, it’s important to keep us warm by wearing proper clothes. Vests, sweaters, cardigans, these are all great. However, some clothes can be highly absorbent. To stay warm and protect your clothes at the same time, I recommend wearing practical jackets and coats, such as:
- Rain Coats (Perfect for rainy day outfits)
- Waxed Jackets (Outdoor vibes)
- Water Resistant Trench Coats (Ideal for a chic look on rainy days and also suited for work)
Besides short jackets, consider long coats as well since they can protect your pants, skirts, and long dresses better, not to mention the warmness.
If you’re looking for high-quality jackets and coats for rainy days, Barbour is a great brand to explore. It was founded in 1894 and is famous for its waxed jackets. Plus, it offers many other jackets and coats with waterproof or water-resistant features.
TIP #7: Style Up with Rain Boots
I think rain boots can be a cute accent to a rainy day outfit. For instance, if your overall look is in a dark or neutral tone, wearing vivid or colorful rain boots can be eye-catching in a good way.
If you’re wondering where to find lovely and high-quality rain boots, check out Hunter. Founded in 1856, this brand is famous for its waterproof boots. There are tall rain boots, short rain boots, and other cool styles in various colors. I believe their boots will help you complete a fabulous rainy day outfit!
TIP #8: Other Best Shoes for Rainy Days
I barely wear socks and sneakers on rainy days. If you’ve experienced it, you know how uncomfortable and depressing it feels when they’re completely soaked. I feel bad just imagining it!
So, I love wearing sandals instead, especially in warm seasons (In cold seasons, I often wear boots). With sandals, I don’t need to wear socks (and no need to dry them when they get wet). Plus, after a walk in the rain, if there’s dirt on my sandals or feet, I can just rinse and dry them quickly.
Compared to other shoes, sandals are less stuffy and more breathable. And there won’t be any tiny ponds in your shoes, which is why they are perfect for a rainy day outfit.
In addition to regular sandals, I think slides, (open-toed) mules, and platform shoes are nice rainy day shoes too.
Slides and (open-toed) mules have the same advantages as sandals, and platform shoes can help prevent your shoes and pants (or skirts and dresses) from getting completely wet when stepping on puddles.
Besides, if you have to wear high heels on rainy days, I suggest wearing block heels instead of stiletto heels to avoid slipping.
TIP #9: Clear Pieces for a Stylish Touch
Imagine raindrops falling on a window or a clear umbrella and gently sliding down. Isn’t it romantic, dreamy, and poetic? (I love this scene so much!)
To achieve a similar effect, I think we can take inspiration from it for our rainy day outfits. For example, you could carry a clear bag and a clear umbrella on rainy days. Not only do they make a perfect match, but you’ll also look like someone with great fashion sense!
Remember, the best day to wear this outfit is a rainy day. Or we could say it’s one of the best rainy day outfits! So it’s definitely worth trying!
Of course, it doesn’t have to be a clear bag. It could be a clear raincoat, clear shoes, etc. (But my go-to is a clear bag!)
TIP #10: Wear Bright & Warm Tones
Sometimes, rainy days can make us feel moody and cold. Wearing bright, warm tones, such as red, orange, yellow, brown, burgundy, and pink, can help brighten our mood and even make us feel a little warmer psychologically, compared to wearing cooler tones or achromatic colors.
However, this is just an optional tip I want to suggest. At the end of the day, wearing the outfit that makes you feel good is what matters most!
