Tips for Old Money Outfits
TIP #1: Basic, Timeless Pieces
Old money usually doesn’t follow trends. They are satisfied with their status and style which always look timeless and refined.
To dress like old money, one of the easiest ways is to wear classic clothing and accessories. In other words, the pieces that never go out of style. Keep this tip in mind as it is the fundamental of old money outfits.
I’ll share more details throughout this post but first, if you have no idea what classic pieces are, think of basic items, such as a shirt, sweater, cardigan, blazer, dressy pants, elegant heels, etc. They are excellent items to start with!
TIP #2: Dressy or Tailored Clothes
Have you noticed that old money often wears dressy or tailored clothes? By wearing those types of clothes, they can have the poshest and most sophisticated look, and so can you.
Tailored suits, blazers, coats, shirts, blouses, dressy pants, shorts, and skirts…these are all great choices. For a touch of feminine flair, I recommend a tweed skirt suit. It can make your old money outfit really classy!
TIP #3: High-Quality Materials
Old money tends to choose the best (highest-quality) products when they shop. Of course, clothing is no exception.
So, how do we know what the best quality clothes are? Often, they come from luxury brands or are made from premium materials like silk and cashmere. These fabrics are incredibly soft and comfortable, making them a go-to for those who truly value quality and comfort. Moreover, silk has a delicate sheen that is perfect for a classy, elegant look.
While some people may not focus much on the fabrics or materials of their clothing, this subtle detail is what sets old money outfits apart from others.
If you’re on a budget, it’s totally fine to opt for substitutes like satin or regular knitwear, which are much more affordable. But if you’re serious about achieving the old money aesthetic and want to perfect your look, give silk and cashmere clothes a try.
TIP #4: Style without Denim
Denim is rarely seen in old money outfits. It’s too casual and affordable, which is far from the image of old money.
Don’t panic. You can still dress an old money look perfectly without denim. For example, if you’re used to wearing jeans and a denim jacket, try swapping them for dressy pants (like slacks, chinos, or wide-leg pants), a classic cardigan, or a tailored jacket. This will give you a much more old money-like appearance!
TIP #5: Solid, Neutral Colors
Why are old money outfits so chic? Besides choosing polished clothes and accessories, the solid, neutral color tone plays a key role.
To create a look that never goes out of style, which I mentioned earlier, selecting the right colors is important.
For a typical old money look, solid (no pattern or print) and neutral colors, such as white, cream, beige, brown, black, gray, and navy are the best. Especially white, which I’ll explain to you later.
Of course, if you’d like to give it a personal twist, feel free to add the color you like!
TIP #6: Dress in White
Did you know that wearing white clothes was once a privilege for the wealthy? If we think about it, it’s not hard to understand.
We all know that white clothes get dirty easily. So, it was not economical for the poor to wear white all the time. On the contrary, the wealthy could do that without any concern.
That’s why white is the perfect color for old money outfits. Not only is it timeless and chic, but it is also associated with wealth psychologically.
TIP #7: Classic Patterns
Does it mean I can’t wear any patterned or printed clothes for my old money outfit? Definitely not! While patterns are less common in the old money style, they can still be incorporated tastefully.
My suggestion is to opt for classic patterns like stripe, check, houndstooth, or herringbone. That way, you can have a smart old money look.
TIP #8: Logoless
Forget about all the clothing and accessories adorned with conspicuous luxury brand logos. They are not the key to achieving an old money look. Unlike new money or those eager to flaunt wealth, old money is never obsessed with logos. To truly embody the old money style, you should have the same mindset.
The good news? You don’t need to splurge on expensive luxury items to style old money outfits. Interestingly, while this aesthetic focuses on the wealthy look, it is an accessible style everybody can easily achieve regardless of wealth and social status.

What’s the best bag for an old money look? Nothing beats a leather bag.

Now, can you feel the power of leather bags? With their refined, high-class atmosphere, they certainly can elevate your entire look.
That said, you really don’t need to pick a pricy bag to achieve the old money aesthetic. A decent, affordable leather bag with a classic, high-quality look is all you need.
I highly recommend a leather handbag or shoulder bag, as they are more elegant and chic than other styles, and absolutely fit for old money outfits.
